John Van Reenen, Ronald Coase School Professor at the London School of Economics, echoed that hope. "I think the declinist narrative is ridiculously overblown," he told Newsweek. "The most damaging, self-harming economic policies were implemented by the main opposition party, Brexit (destroying 4-8 percent of GDP) and the [then-Prime Minister Liz] Truss minibudget [in 2022]. And we are still recovering from the cuts to capital infrastructure in the austerity era."
