The Wall Street Journal: They're in the Top 10% of Earners. They Still Don't Feel Rich


On paper, these Americans are doing great. Inflation-adjusted incomes of the top 5% rose more than 100% from 1983 to 2019, according to an analysis by Xavier Jaravel, a professor at the London School of Economics. While the affluent may have sticker shock from higher prices just like other Americans, inflation has actually hit them less hard because of the mix of items that they buy, Jaravel found.
