POID Director John Van Reenen presented on "The rise of superstar firms: causes and consequences". The tech titans have become the centre of much interest by competition authorities, policymakers and the general public. John Van Reenen will show that the growth of such "superstar firms" in the last few decades stretches well beyond the high-tech sector and is a more general phenomenon in advanced economies. Reviewing his own work and that of many others, he documents these trends, evaluates their causes and some consequences. Technological change seems very important in understanding the rise of the superstars and this raises many policy issues in antitrust and beyond.
