About this event

Dr Anna Valero was invited to join an ‘Ask the Experts’ panel discussion hosted by the British Academy and Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE), following the publication of their jointly commissioned report Mapping the Economic Returns of R&D in the UK. This work builds upon the Academy’s and CaSE’s substantial existing research and policy work on the role of R&D and innovation in the UK economy and society, some of which Dr Valero has already been involved with for many years including the seminal early work for CaSE on the economic case for R&D, to their more recent work understanding the value of SHAPE disciplines to UK R&D.

The event brought together a curated group of senior civil servants and policy stakeholders to explore the report’s methodology and implications for UK R&D and innovation policy. The aim of the panel discussion was to really draw connections between this work and the wider policy landscape for R&D and innovation, particularly in relation to delivering on the aims of the Industrial Strategy now that SR decisions have been made.

The panel discussion featured:

•    A presentation from the Academy, CaSE and Cambridge Econometrics on the recent publication
•    A 45-minute panel discussion on the wider national (and international) policy environment
•    Audience Q&A with approximately 30 invited civil servants and policy stakeholders
